If you’re looking for camping near Sydney, you really don’t need to drive for days to find somewhere incredible.

We recently hired a Chill'd by JUCY Malibu campervan for a South Coast NSW road trip and were reminded just how much we love campervan travel. Having your accommodation, kitchen, and road trip essentials all in one place gives you so much freedom to travel at your own pace, stay flexible, and wake up somewhere completely different each morning.

If you’ve been researching camping Sydney options or planning a road trip out of the city, these are three unreal camps within 3 hours of Sydney that we’d happily road trip to again.

Our JUCY road trip experience

One of the things we appreciated most about this trip was how straightforward the whole experience felt.

Picking up the camper from the JUCY Sydney branch was smooth and easy, which meant we could get on the road quickly rather than wasting time sorting logistics. The van itself had everything we needed for a comfortable trip, and having a setup that let us cook our own meals, sleep comfortably, and stay flexible with our plans made the whole experience feel really freeing.

One thing we love about campervan travel is that it gives you access to so many different styles of trips. Whether you’re after beachfront camping, comfort-focused holiday parks, or nature-filled national park stays, having everything with you makes spontaneous adventure feel so much easier.

If you’re specifically searching for free camping Sydney options, these aren’t free stays, but they’re fantastic choices if you’re after beautiful locations, great amenities, and easy access from Sydney.

1. Coledale Camping Reserve

If your dream camping trip involves waking up to the sound of waves and stepping straight onto the beach with a coffee in hand, Coledale Camping Reserve is hard to beat.

Located just north of Wollongong, this absolute beachfront campground feels worlds away from Sydney despite being only around 90 minutes from the city. Its close proximity makes it such an easy escape from the city, while still feeling like a proper coastal getaway. Because it’s such a popular spot, especially during peak travel periods, this is one you’ll want to book ahead rather than leave until the last minute.

One of the things we loved most about Coledale is how simple everything feels. Slow mornings by the ocean, sunrise swims, beach walks, and a genuinely relaxed coastal atmosphere. There’s also plenty nearby if you want to turn it into more of a road trip stop rather than just a single destination. The iconic Sea Cliff Bridge is just up the road, Wollongong’s beaches and cafes are within easy reach, and there are some beautiful coastal walks nearby too.

Why we love it:

  • Absolute beachfront camping
  • Great amenities including hot showers and laundry facilities
  • Only around 1.5 hours from Sydney
  • Great swimming and sunrise views
  • Easy access to Wollongong and nearby attractions
  • Dog friendly (check current park rules before travelling)

Good for: Beach lovers, couples, families, dog owners, first-time campers

2. Tasman Holiday Parks Jervis Bay

If you love the idea of camping but also appreciate solid amenities, powered sites, and a few extra comforts, Tasman Holiday Parks Jervis Bay is such a great option.

Located in Huskisson, this makes an ideal base for exploring one of NSW’s most beautiful coastal regions. From white sand beaches and clear water to dolphin cruises, paddleboarding, and coastal walks, there’s plenty to fill a few days here.

For campervan travel in a JUCY, convenience is a huge part of the appeal. With both powered and unpowered sites, great facilities, and easy access to town, this is a really stress-free option, especially if you’re newer to road tripping or just like balancing adventure with comfort.

We also love that staying somewhere like this can make longer road trips feel far more manageable. A couple of nights with proper facilities, easy showers, and a comfortable setup can be the perfect reset before heading off to your next destination.

Why we love it:

  • Great facilities and powered sites
  • Right on the water with access to kayak and SUP hire
  • Perfect base for exploring Jervis Bay
  • Close to beaches, cafes, and shops
  • Easy campervan access
  • Great balance of comfort and adventure
  • Dog friendly

Good for: Comfort campers, first-time campervan travellers, dog owners, groups

3. Green Patch Campground, Booderee National Park

If we had to pick the most magical camping spot on this list, Green Patch would be right up there.

Located inside Booderee National Park, this is one of those places that instantly makes you want to stay longer. Crystal clear water, white sand beaches, native bushland, and wildlife wandering through camp make it feel incredibly special.

Kangaroos casually grazing while you make breakfast? Very possible. This is the kind of spot that reminds us why campervan travel is so special. Being able to stay somewhere immersed in nature, cook your own meals, and wake up steps from the beach makes the whole experience feel incredibly freeing.

The beach here is beautiful for swimming and snorkelling, and there are walking trails nearby if you want to explore more of the national park. It does take a little more planning than the other spots on this list, as bookings can fill quickly and national park fees apply, but it’s absolutely worth the effort.

Why we love it:

  • Incredible national park setting
  • Amazing wildlife encounters
  • Beautiful swimming and snorkelling
  • Campground facilities including hot showers
  • Peaceful, nature-filled atmosphere
  • Feels like a genuine escape

Good for: Nature lovers, photographers, couples, adventure travellers

Final thoughts

One of the best things about hiring a campervan is the freedom it gives you to travel at your own pace. Whether you’re chasing a coastal escape, a few days in Jervis Bay, or a nature-filled national park adventure, these camping spots prove you don’t need to travel far from Sydney to find somewhere incredible.

For us, road trips like this are exactly what make campervan travel so much fun. Flexible plans, beautiful scenery, and the freedom to pull up somewhere special and call it home for a few nights.
