But what makes summer road trips in Australia genuinely different from any other season is the school calendar sitting right on top of it. Most states finish the school year between 12 and 19 December and don't head back until sometime between 26 January and 3 February, which hands families roughly six weeks of summer school holidays to work with, plus Christmas, New Year and the Australia Day long weekend all landing inside that window.

We wanted to know what that actually looks like in booking terms, so we pulled almost 1,500 completed JUCY Australia road trips from 1 December 2025 through 28 February 2026 and broke down the reasons a JUCY summer road trip is the absolute best plan you could make . Brisbane to Sydney: the ultimate East-Coast summer run

Based on where JUCY travellers were going last year, this is definitely one to consider. Around 200 happy travellers ran between Brisbane and Sydney last summer, making it the most popular one-way road trip in the country for a JUCY summer holiday. Head south from Brisbane through the Gold Coast, roll into Byron Bay for a couple of nights, then keep working down through Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie before finishing in Sydney. Or, reverse the journey for a spectacular north-bound trip.

Road trip highlights:

• Beach-hopping through the Gold Coast and Byron Bay

Suggested length: 7 nights. That's how long JUCY customers typically took last year for their summer adventures.

Where to stop: Overnight at the Gold Coast, then settle into Byron Bay for two nights before pushing on to Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie, one night each, ahead of your final run into Sydney.

Who's on board: The top two JUCY vehicles travellers took on this route last summer were the Crib Plus and the Condo, making up almost half of the bookings!

Sydney to Melbourne: the South-Coast summer run

The second most popular corridor for our travellers, with over 100 combined trips running between the two cities. This one skips the highway in favour of the coast: Jervis Bay's white sand and turquoise water, Batemans Bay, Merimbula, and across into Gippsland before finishing in Melbourne.

Road trip highlights:

• Jervis Bay, home to some of the whitest sand in the country
• Small coastal towns along the NSW South Coast, Batemans Bay and Merimbula included
• Ninety Mile Beach and the Gippsland Lakes before reaching Melbourne

Where to stop: Jervis Bay and Batemans Bay for one night each, Merimbula for two, then a final night around the Gippsland Lakes before rolling into Melbourne.

Adelaide to Melbourne: wine country meets coastal summer

With over 75 combined trips running this route last summer, experiencing South Australia's wine regions with one of the world's most famous coastal drives. Start in Adelaide with a detour through the Adelaide Hills or Barossa Valley, then push into Victoria via the Great Ocean Road, finishing at the Twelve Apostles before rolling into Melbourne.

Road trip highlights:

• Cellar door stops through the Barossa Valley and Adelaide Hills
• The full length of the Great Ocean Road, at its best in summer's long daylight hours
• The Twelve Apostles and Port Campbell National Park

Where to stop: A night or two in the Barossa Valley or Adelaide Hills, then Mount Gambier or Port Fairy to break up the drive, before two nights around Port Campbell and Apollo Bay to properly do the Great Ocean Road.

Who's on board: This route ran almost evenly between the Coaster and the Condo. The 2-berth Coaster is the couples' pick, while the 4-berth Condo points to small groups and families doing the wine-and-coast combo together.

Best for: Couples and small groups wanting to combine wine country with one of Australia's most scenic coastal drives.

The Perth loop: Margaret River and the south west

Perth wasn't just the fourth busiest pickup point in Australia for JUCY travellers, it also produced the single biggest loop trip volume of any hub in the country, with over 250 travellers picking up and dropping back in Perth last year in summer. The obvious answer is south: Margaret River's wineries, Yallingup and Injidup's beaches, and a detour down to Augusta where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet.

Road trip highlights:

• Wineries and breweries scattered through Margaret River
• Beach days at Yallingup and Injidup
• Cape Leeuwin at Augusta, where two oceans collide

Suggested length: 8 nights, the average amount of time a JUCY traveller loops around Perth.

Where to stop: Break the drive south with a night in Bunbury, base yourself in Margaret River for three or four nights, then a night in Augusta before looping back through Busselton to Perth.

Who's on board: Almost half this loop went with the 4-berth Crib Plus, as it's a strong family and small-group runner, with the 2-berth Chill'd Malibu showing plenty of couples along for the wine and beach combo too.

Best for: Couples and friend groups after a compact, high-quality summer holiday loop without the long-haul driving.

Cairns to Brisbane: the tropical Queensland coast run

One of the JUCY traveller hidden-gems from last year was a south-bound trip from Cairns to Brisbane. Head south from Cairns through Mission Beach and Townsville, detour out to the Whitsundays for a couple of days, then keep tracking the coast through Mackay, Rockhampton and Bundaberg before finishing on the Sunshine Coast and rolling into Brisbane.

Road trip highlights:

• Kicking things off with a trip to the Great Barrier Reef
• Mission Beach and Magnetic Island for an easy start out of Cairns
• The Whitsundays and Airlie Beach, Queensland's tropical island-hopping base
• The Sunshine Coast's beaches as your final stretch before Brisbane

Suggested length: 10 nights, take your time on this one, it's worth it!

Where to stop: Mission Beach or Townsville for your first night or two, two to three nights based around Airlie Beach for the Whitsundays, then Mackay, Rockhampton or Bundaberg to break up the run south, finishing with a night or two on the Sunshine Coast before Brisbane.

Who's on board: The Condo was the clear favourite for JUCY travellers last year, with the Coaster and Crib+ also seeing a lot of love. With two of the top three favourite campers from Cairns being 4-berth campervans, this leans strongly toward families and small groups, though the Coaster is the perfect camper for a couple's coastal adventure.

Best for: Families, small groups and anyone wanting to see Queensland's full tropical coastline in one go.

If you're after Australia holiday ideas that put you in good company, the records show you're in exactly the right place. Almost 3 in 4 JUCY summer travellers were aged between 18 and 34, so pack your sense of adventure and get amongst it, you'll fit right in. Just under half the crowd were fair dinkum Aussies, with a solid contingent of Brits close behind, and travellers from Germany, France and the Netherlands rounding out the mix. Spot another JUCY van on the road? You know the drill: give 'em the JUCY wave and a good old fashioned g'day.

When to book your summer road trip (and how to dodge peak pricing)

Here's a handy tip: when you book can make just as much difference as where you go. Pickup dates slap bang in the middle of the school holidays, mid-December through to late January, come with a premium, everyone wants a van at the same time, so prices follow the crowd. If you aren't travelling with kids, push your trip into February instead, once the kids are back at their desks, and rates ease right off. If you are looking to travel during school holidays with the kids, get in early, and book ahead whilst prices are lower.

The good news is you don't need to plan a year out. Most JUCY travellers lock in their summer campervan about a month before pickup, so if you're only just thinking about it now, you're right on schedule. Just know that if your dates fall inside the school holidays themselves, it pays to book a little sooner and budget a touch more for the privilege of prime time.

How far people actually travel in summer

Last summer, JUCY travellers settled into a pace that felt more like a proper holiday than a road-tripping mission. Most spent around a week on the road, covering enough ground to wake up somewhere new every day or two, without ever feeling like the driving took over the trip. Some crews kept it short and local, others chased the horizon and kept going, there's plenty of room to make the trip your own.

And a good chunk of last year's travellers skipped the loop altogether, picking up in one city and dropping off in another. It's the clearest sign yet that summer is the season Aussies like to travel the furthest, so get in your JUCY camper and chase the horizon!
