MOUNT WARNING, WOLLUMBIN NATIONAL PARK

Wollumbin National Park: A Sacred Stop on Your Brisbane to Byron Road Trip

An hour and a half south of Springbrook National Park, Wollumbin National Park is one of the most culturally significant landscapes on the NSW North Coast, and a must-stop on your Brisbane to Byron Bay drive.

Please note: The Wollumbin summit track is currently closed until at least mid-2027, out of respect for the Bundjalung People, for whom the summit is a sacred site under traditional law. The NSW Government has requested that all visitors honour this wish and refrain from attempting to climb to the summit.

The good news? The national park itself remains open and well worth exploring. Here's what you can still do:

  • Lyrebird Track: A beautiful, accessible short walk from the Breakfast Creek car park that leads through ancient subtropical rainforest to a lush lookout. Listen out for the remarkable lyrebird calls echoing through the trees.
  • Breakfast Creek Picnic Area: A serene spot to stop, stretch your legs, and take in the verdant surroundings before continuing south to Byron Bay.
  • Photograph Wollumbin from afar: For the most spectacular panoramic views of the mountain, head to nearby Nightcap National Park or Border Ranges National Park, where you can admire Wollumbin's iconic volcanic peak rising dramatically above the hinterland.

Wollumbin means 'cloud catcher' in the language of the Bundjalung People, and as you look up at the ancient peak wreathed in mist, it's easy to understand why. Even without the summit climb, this is a powerful and beautiful place to spend an hour or two.
